Delayed due to the pandemic, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Cinderella finally had its long-awaited premiere on August 18, 2021 at the Gillian Lynne Theater in London’s West End.
Lloyd Webber is one of the world’s most famous impresarios and composers of musical theater—having created such memorable productions as Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Phantom of the Opera, and Cats--and his new opus reimagines the classic fairy tale.
Set in a picturesque village in a story-book version of France, the familiar story is updated to include a goth, defiant Cinderella, a gay Prince Charming, and a Fairy Godmother who is actually a plastic surgeon.
The production has been greeted with very favorable reviews: The Telegraph in London calls the production “one of composer’s best,” and The Times calls it “simply joyous.”
The music in Cinderella is vintage Lloyd Webber as the song “Far Too Late” illustrates below. Performed by Cinderella star Carrie Hope Fletcher and Andrew Lloyd Webber, the song will undoubtedly inspire performances by sopranos for years to come.
